小说讲述某小镇上两名一正一邪的吸血鬼兄弟（Stefan VS Damon）争夺一个美丽少女Elena和她身边人的灵魂的故事。美剧吸血鬼日记根据这部小说改编，情节和人物安排有些不同，开头就能看出来，小说里的 Elena开始时给人感觉很虚荣，不过好像是内心空虚的原因。吸血鬼日记的小说比暮光之城要早十年左右（吸91年，暮03年），所以不存在网上有些人说吸血鬼日记是模仿暮光的说法。另外个人觉得吸血鬼日记女主角扮演者比暮光的女主角要秀气好看，特别是开始的皮衣登场很帅气，男主也很耐看~~
